Maptember – what’s all this about?

when the world maps to here

You have most probably heard of Movember, which is when chaps around the World grow moustaches to raise money and awareness for testicular cancer.  Well this year September is officially “Maptember” in the UK.

Why Maptember?  Well, this September the UK will host 3 big geo-events:

  1. State of the Map 2013 – SOtM is the conference of OpenStreetMap, the project to make and distribute free geographic data for the world. This year SOtM is being held in Birmingham, in the heart of the country.
  2. AGI GeoCommunity ’13 – This year’s AGI GeoCommunity theme is “Open For Business”. It is the largest and most comprehensive independent conference in the UK digital mapping and data calendar. This year it happens at the EMCC in Nottingham.
  3. FOSS4G 2013 – The 2013 Conference of the Free and Open-Source Software for Geospatial rolls into the Nottingham EMCC as the AGI GeoComm finishes. Up goes the GeoCamp tent, and in pour the greatest developers of open source software in the world.

In addition to these 3 big events, there are a number of smaller events which focus on aspects of spatial information, cartography and remote sensing. In total, there are 11 events running so if you are into maps and spatial analysis the UK is the place to be in September, ergh i mean Maptember, 2013.

Keep an eye on the Maptember site for news of other map-related shenanigans.
